Equal rights for LGBTQ+ teachers and students in Texas

themegalosaurus:

So, my understanding is that I have to be a little bit careful about wording this because there’s legal action underway, but I would love to invite you all

1. To take a look at this story from The Dallas Morning News about Stacy Bailey, an art teacher – and former Teacher of the Year at the Texas school where she has taught for nine years – who has been placed on ‘administrative leave’ since September. That means she has not been able to teach any classes. No explanation has been given to parents as to why this has happened.

2. To read and consider signing this petition, which points out that the Mansfield school district does not protect LGBTQ+ staff and students under its anti-discrimination policy, and asks that the district make this protection explicit. The petition will be submitted to the school board at a meeting on March 27, 2018.

This teacher is a friend of a friend, and she was placed on administrative leave shortly after requesting that the district make exactly the rule changes that the petition requests. Her suspension makes it very clear why they are needed.

At the time of my writing this, the petition has 129 signatures. The goal is to get to 1,000 but I feel like you guys could help push it a lot higher than that. Please sign and signal boost!
